Etsy Craft Party 2015

The Cotton Shoppe was a co-organiser for the Etsy Craft Party 2015, which took place last Saturday, 6 June. This is an annual craft event which took place worldwide on 5 and 6 June this year.

Organised by Simply for Love, this annual event saw a collaboration with other talented Etsy sellers such as Azallea Craft-Smiths, Ozzy & Lulu, Rough Beauty, Noruyo Creations and The Artbug to bring about a day of making and crafting.  This is the 3rd Etsy Craft Party which Singapore is hosting and my second year of participation.

We received an overwhelming response for the Etsy Craft Party this year, with all 80 places for the craft party taken up one week before the event and many more participants on the waiting list!  This year, we are very thankful to The Playtent for the generous sponsor of their spaces in Joo Chiat for the event.  A total of about 85 people attended the event.

The theme of the craft party is Kaleidoscope: Paper Taking Shape. Participants had the opportunity to learn about paper weaving and create paper bracelets and paper gems.

We saw people from all walks of life attend the event, such as families with children, couples, friends and more.  This is what crafting is about!  It bonds communities through a common language and hands-on activities using simple media like paper, fabrics, plastic and more.

The most interesting activity during the craft party where we saw people coming together is the creation of a big community collage art piece using coloured papers and magazine pages.  It’s such a wonderful sight seeing participants cutting and glueing papers, and piecing the artwork together, as a culmination of each person’s creativity!

What makes a party awesome?  Yummy food of course!  Many thanks to Dainty Candy and Puteri’s Baking Boutiq who had kindly sponsored food to feed our hungry crafters and took so much efforts to decorate the food corner!  Not forgetting the refreshing lemonade drinks by Simply for Love to quench our thirst too!

Another favourite hit during the craft party was the fun photo booth and photography services, that were sponsored by Blissful Studios.  Participants and crafters present had loads of great fun posing for shots using the funky props available.  To view the fun shots, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BlissfulStudiosSG.

Hang on…the sweet finale to the craft party has to be the lucky draw with attractive handmade prizes contributed by the organisers and other crafters.  There were a total of five prizes worth hundreds of dollars!  Congratulations to the lucky winners!

Many thanks to Simply for Love for distributing a certificate of appreciation to all sponsors and organisers.  It meant a lot to me and made me feel really proud to be a part of the organising committee!

Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack

I was asked to customize a Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack by a valued customer.  She needed a bag that’s huge enough to hold her baby carrier.  Although this is my first attempt, I readily agreed as it looked pretty easy to sew.  Most importantly, I think this is going to be a fun project and will look really cute using my favourite fabrics from the Very Hungry Caterpillar collection by Andover Fabrics!

The finished drawstring backpack measures 17″ x 12″ and is very roomy for a baby carrier, diapers and other small baby essentials.  In fact, it’s so versatile it can also be used as a beach bag, a book bag for your trip to the library, gym bag and so on.  The Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack features lots of cheery caterpillars, butterflies, cupcakes, colourful dots and will be an absolute delight to own for all die hard Hungry Caterpillar fans (just like me)!

Made of 100% cotton fabrics, the Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack is so comfortable and lightweight to carry around.  The interior is lined with a dark green fabric and can easily fit some books, lunch box, water bottle and clothes.  I string an off-white cording for the drawstring, through loops attached to the bottom of the bag.  The length of the cording is adjustable according to the height of the user.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack is now available for customization in my Etsy store at https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/234980421/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-drawstring.  Please check it out soon as quantities are limited!  Please note that this item is made to order and will take 2 – 3 weeks for production.

I can’t get enough of all the fun bags that I’m making out of the Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric collection.  Hmm….what shall I sew next?  😉

Little Red Riding Hood Tote Bags

I’m in love with Riley Blake’s fabrics and couldn’t take my eyes off these beautiful fabrics from the Little Red Riding Hood collection.  Don’t you agree they are so pretty?  :)

The first thing that comes to my mind is to sew tote bags using these pretty fabrics.  Found an interesting tutorial at The Fabric Mill Blog which I had used as a good reference while creating my totes.

I’ve since sewn three Little Red Riding Hood totes, in shades of red, pink and aqua which are available for purchase in my Etsy store at https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/191713479/little-red-riding-hood-girls-small-tote.  I love this pretty collection so much that I’ve shipped more fabrics over from USA yesterday to make similar awesome products!  Stay tuned to my blog as I share my works in progress of more Little Red Riding Hood products.  😀

First Etsy Sale

I made my first Etsy sale tonight…woohoo!!! Besides, it’s not just one, but two sales! :) I finally see some light at the end of the tunnel after a month of hard work, which goes to show that perseverance works.

I’ve put up two sets of pretty fabric buttons made using the 12 Days of Christmas fabric collection by Anni Downs of Hatched and Patched. There are a total of 12 buttons in each set, each representing the 12 Days of Christmas such as “A partridge in a pear tree”, “Two turtle doves”, “Three French hens” etc. Really cute! I love these buttons to bits as they are made using my favourite Christmas collection.

Now that I’ve sold all my 12 Days of Christmas sets, it’s time to make more for listing! I’ve however used up most of the collection, so it’s also time to purchase more! LOL

There are lots of things that I’ve yet to iron out in my store, such as packaging, marketing, photography etc. However, I know it’s important to take things at a time, because this is a new journey for me and lots of self-discovery along the way. It’s also a process where we as sellers need to know what works and what not, and to refine the processes along the way.
