Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack

I was asked to customize a Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack by a valued customer.  She needed a bag that’s huge enough to hold her baby carrier.  Although this is my first attempt, I readily agreed as it looked pretty easy to sew.  Most importantly, I think this is going to be a fun project and will look really cute using my favourite fabrics from the Very Hungry Caterpillar collection by Andover Fabrics!

The finished drawstring backpack measures 17″ x 12″ and is very roomy for a baby carrier, diapers and other small baby essentials.  In fact, it’s so versatile it can also be used as a beach bag, a book bag for your trip to the library, gym bag and so on.  The Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack features lots of cheery caterpillars, butterflies, cupcakes, colourful dots and will be an absolute delight to own for all die hard Hungry Caterpillar fans (just like me)!

Made of 100% cotton fabrics, the Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack is so comfortable and lightweight to carry around.  The interior is lined with a dark green fabric and can easily fit some books, lunch box, water bottle and clothes.  I string an off-white cording for the drawstring, through loops attached to the bottom of the bag.  The length of the cording is adjustable according to the height of the user.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Drawstring Backpack is now available for customization in my Etsy store at https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/234980421/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-drawstring.  Please check it out soon as quantities are limited!  Please note that this item is made to order and will take 2 – 3 weeks for production.

I can’t get enough of all the fun bags that I’m making out of the Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric collection.  Hmm….what shall I sew next?  😉

Personalized Baby Gift

If you are looking for a personalized baby gift, consider keepsake items like baby blankets and bibs.  These items are great for babies to snuggle and swaddle up with and make unique personalized baby gift ideas when they are handsewn with the baby’s name.

Making personalized baby gift sets was never in my business plan, but I decide to give it a shot anyway upon requests from friends.  In fact, over the past few months, I’ve been overwhelmed with orders for such personalized baby gift sets since I completed my first order last September.  Since then, orders have been pouring in through my craft markets and by word of mouth.  It’s quite stressful trying to meet the deadlines of customers, while juggling my day job and family, but I find so much joy in designing these personalized baby gift sets as they are all so cute! I wished I had the opportunity to do these for my girls when they were babies!

My personalized baby gift sets are all designed and handmade in Singapore, with studio-quality cotton and flannels imported from the United States.  All gift sets can be customized, from a typical 3-piece set consisting of a minky blanket, bib and burp cloth to a 5-piece set consisting of a minky blanket, bib, burp cloth, pillow case and plush toy.  I just love all the cute fabrics I’ve imported, which come in gorgeous designs for boys and girls.  Everything from princesses and cupcakes for girls to dinosaurs and robots for boys, customers are spoilt for choices!

All blankets, bibs and burp cloths in my personalized baby gift sets typically come with a dotted minky backing.  I can’t say enough how I’m in love with the minky!  They are so soft and luxurious for our precious little bundles!  Together with the cotton or flannel top, the minky blanket is an excellent accessory which keeps babies snug and warm.  Its use is very versatile too and can be doubled up as a swaddle blanket, playmat, car seat blanket, stroller blanket and more!

Names are hand or machine appliqued onto the items in a contrasting fabric, for a unique personal touch.

Christmas Crafts Workshops

It’s November now and Christmas is fast approaching!  Have you started your Christmas shopping or lugged those decor out of your storeroom to doll up your home for this beautiful season?  Perhaps you may even want to consider doing Christmas crafts as gifts for your loved ones, or using them as decor at home.  This would add a nice handmade feel and warmth to your home this Christmas!

There are so many Christmas crafts you could work on, such as Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments, paper wreaths, wall hangings and more.  You really don’t need to be an expert crafter to create them.  If you are an experienced crafter or quilter, you can of course work on more advanced Christmas crafts projects such as Christmas stockings, wall quilts, table runners etc.

When I was approached by my organisation to conduct an interest group activity for my colleagues last week, the first idea that came to my mind was to organise a Christmas crafts workshop.  For this, I designed a Christmas ornaments workshop, which is so appropriate for the season!  Not just that, doing craft work is really an excellent idea to bond with colleagues, friends and family members.  It is also a great means of therapy to drive all the work stress away! Everyone had fun and it was amazing seeing my colleagues putting their creativity to good use.

In addition, I was also invited by The Playtent to conduct a similar Christmas crafts workshop last Saturday.  Although it was not a great turnout, the workshop turned out really well.  Guess having small groups can be a perk as there are more opportunities to interact with participants.  This is my first attempt at conducting workshops and I hope it will not be the last.  It was great sharing with everyone my skills and experience.  I will be working out some plans with The Playtent to conduct more regular craft and sewing workshops next year.  Looking forward!

It’s sometimes not easy to find a good craft workshop in Singapore as there are not many studios or crafters out there conducting such classes.  If you are interested to pick up a new arts and crafts skill, or you are looking for a weekend or school holiday activity for your children, then these Art Rojak! workshops are perfect as they cater to all ages and skill levels and won’t burn a hole in your pocket!

Craft Workshop in Singapore

I’ve been invited by The Playtent to conduct the Christmas ornaments making workshop.  In this workshop, you’ll learn pattern transfer and the basics of sewing such as running stitches and edging stitches.  I would then show you how to sew simple Christmas ornaments using felt and embroidery floss.  There are three patterns available for the craft workshop – snowman, Christmas stocking and Christmas tree.  They are so cute and will add lots of warmth and cheer to your home this Christmas!  Great as stocking stuffers or simply as a decor on your mantle or Christmas tree.  Join me to find out how simple it is to put them together, they are really not as complicated as they look!  To register for my workshop, visit http://www.theplaytent.com/product/make-your-own-felt-christmas-ornament/.

Covered Buttons Accessories

Covered buttons are so awesome and versatile for creating crafts and accessories, something which i discovered by chance while searching for pretty buttons for my tote bags and brainstorming for quick project ideas for my craft markets.  They are also easy to make on a weekend and can be used in a wide variety of crafts such as hair accessories, earrings, garments, bags, toys and more.  Making these buttons is also an excellent way to use up my fabric scraps, which really helps to clear junk off my craft room!  LOL

I’ve since created and sold hundreds of accessories using fabric buttons, some of my favourite items being earrings, hair accessories and badges. Fabric buttons are created using merely metal button kits, which sell at $2 a pack from Daiso.  They come in a variety of sizes such as 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm, 27mm and 38mm.  There are about 10 – 20 metal buttons in each kit, depending on sizes.  Each kit comes with metal buttons with shank backs, template and tools.

Hungry Caterpillar Bag

I’ve sold the Very Hungry Caterpillar Bag in Etsy and have since then received queries on whether more are available in my store.  This Very Hungry Caterpillar Bag is a lunch tote produced from leftover fabrics from Eponine’s quilt.  It’s really the cutest fabric collection ever!  What a wonderful collection for all fans of the Very Hungry Caterpillar classic by Eric Carle!

So, when my BFF ranted about how the Very Hungry Caterpillar Bag was sold in such a short period of time and how she missed the opportunity to own one, I decided to come up with a new design for her using patchwork squares from the Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric collection instead.

Oh, how I love the colours on this new tote bag!

Sharing some photos from my sewing process.  I enjoyed every moment of my creation!

The design of this Very Hungry Caterpillar Bag looks complicated but it’s really quite an easy weekend project and can be whipped up in a couple of hours.  I really should be putting together some tutorials soon to share with all my readers.  But first, need to find time and prioritise in the midst of my crafting, blogging, juggling a full time job and coaching Eponine for her PSLE all at the same time!  LOL

I’ve in the meantime shipped over some Very Hungry Caterpillar fabrics from the USA to make more tote bags and other products.  If you are interested, they are available for pre-order now in my Etsy store at https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/198821993/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-small-cotton.  Delivery is likely to be end September.

Minky Baby Blankets with Flannel Top

I recently got obsessed with minky baby blankets and decided to make some for fun as they didn’t seem too difficult to produce!  Besides selling these minky baby blankets on Etsy, I could also keep some on standby as baby shower gifts.  The dotted minky fabrics come in many gorgeous assorted colours and they are so soft and cuddly to the touch.   I wouldn’t mind making one for myself to sleep in…LOL.  After seeing the cute minky baby blankets, Edith and Eponine have also requested for me to custom make bigger ones for their sweet slumber!

Over the past two months, I’ve been shipping over flannel and dotted minky fabrics from the United States for production of the minky baby blankets.  I think flannel makes a great combination with minky fabrics as they are thicker than cotton, which naturally makes the blanket warmer for babies too.  I’ve so far completed two minky baby blankets, in an owl and happy peapod design.  Check them out below!

Both minky baby blankets are now available in my Etsy store as follows:

https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/198819512/blue-happy-peapod-flannel-minky-baby

The completed minky baby blankets are about 30 inch x 35 inch, which is a generous size for newborn to toddler years.  They can be customised to any desired sizes and there’s also an option to personalise them with the recipient’s name or initials.  In addition, I’ve already received orders for 3-piece baby shower gift sets, which I’ll be customising to include a minky baby blanket, bib and burp cloth, and personalise with the baby’s name of course!  I’ll be sharing them here and list in Etsy once they are completed.  Please contact me for more details if you are interested!

Stay tuned for more minky baby blankets in my Etsy store, as I’ll be sewing them in various cute fabrics over the next few months!
