Etsy organised a global craft event last Friday, 6 June, where crafters from all over the world came together to organise craft parties in their respective countries. The theme of the party for 2014 is RECAPTURE, Bring New Meaning to Your Photographs, where the hosts are given the freedom to inject their creativity on how their respective parties should be organised.
The hosts for Singapore are Salinah and Nuraisah Zailani, two talented sisters who founded Simply-4-Love on Etsy. Together with these talented duo sisters, other Singapore crafters such as Sidetrack Project, Rhinestic’s Knick Knacks, Lovesprouts, Izoned, Not Just Coffee and Blissful-Studios also chipped in to help make the event a successful one! The Cotton Shoppe is also proud to be part of the team!
There was a great turnout of over 40 people at Goodman Arts Centre despite the heavy downpour. Heard from the hosts that this year’s turnout was double of last year’s! Based on this year’s theme, we had all participants craft up a storm using mod podge, embroidery floss, rubber stamps and acrylic paint. Everyone present, adults and kids alike, had a fabulous time getting their hands dirty creating fabulous works of art.
This craft party means a lot to me as it’s the first time that I’m participating in such a large-scale Etsy event. It also allowed me to network with fellow Etsy sellers and build relationships. Singapore’s craft market, being so small, needs a bigger platform for crafters to get together, to synergise and tap on each other’s talents to grow the craft market. It’s really all about working together to achieve a bigger public buy-in and letting Singaporeans know that the handmade movement is here to stay. This is no easy feat but definitely something achievable, and combined efforts from more local crafters can really make a difference!
I’m definitely looking forward to the next Etsy Craft Party and more exciting collaborations with local crafters! Yes, we need more support of “Made in Singapore” products!
